Almost every argument at a supply yard is a unit problem rather than a price problem. The bed is in square feet, the order is in cubic yards, the shelf is in bags and the ticket is in tons โ and the only way to know whether two quotes are for the same thing is to put them all in the same unit first. Why 27?
Because a cubic yard is a cube three feet on every side, and 3 ร 3 ร 3 is 27 cubic feet. Every other conversion on this site is built on it: bags per cubic yard is 27 รท bag size, and coverage per cubic yard is 27 รท depth in feet.
Is there one conversion from cubic yards to tons?
No, and that is the point of having a calculator for it. A cubic yard of mulch weighs about 700 lb and a cubic yard of river rock about 2,800 โ four times as much for exactly the same volume. Any single ‘yards to tons’ number you find online is only true for one material.
Which of these do I actually need?
