It depends entirely on what drives over it. Decorative gravel in beds and borders goes 2 to 3 inches deep, which is enough to hide the ground and stay put. A paver patio needs 4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed base plus 1 inch of bedding sand. A driveway needs 4 inches minimum on firm ground and 8 to 12 inches in layers over clay or soft subgrade, built with coarse stone at the bottom and finer stone on top. A French drain wants 6 to 12 inches of washed stone around the pipe. Working at 1.5 tons per cubic yard, one ton of gravel is 18 cubic feet, so it covers about 108 sq ft at 2 inches, 72 at 3 inches and 54 at 4 inches. Order angular base stone with roughly 20 percent extra, because it loses that much volume under a plate compactor.

Two rules run through that table. Coarse stone goes at the bottom, fine stone on top โ€” the large angular pieces bridge the soft subgrade and the fines lock the surface together. And washed stone is used wherever water has to move through, because the fines that make a driveway hard are exactly what clogs a drain.

How much does that come to in tons?

Gravel is sold by weight, so every job needs a second conversion after the volume. At a working 1.5 tons per cubic yard, one ton is 18 cubic feet.

Densities vary by stone, and the difference is not trivial on a large order โ€” dense crushed limestone can run near 1.7 tons per yard while washed river rock falls closer to 1.3. Ask the supplier for their figure on anything above five tons, and run it through the cubic yards to tons calculator.

What does a real driveway need?

Take a single-car driveway, 12 ft wide and 50 ft long โ€” 600 square feet โ€” built properly over ordinary subgrade in three layers.

Twenty-five tons. That is the number that surprises people, and it is why gravel driveways are quoted by the truckload. It is also five or six deliveries in a tandem dump truck, or one articulated load if the site can take it.

Add the compaction allowance on top of that. Angular stone with fines loses roughly 20 percent of its loose volume under a plate compactor, so the three layers above want ordering at about 20 tons, 10 tons and 6.7 tons respectively to finish at the stated depths โ€” call it 30 tons of material for a 25-ton finished driveway. Skipping that allowance is why so many driveways end up an inch and a half short of the plan.

What does a patio base need?

Less than a driveway, but with a tighter tolerance. A 200 sq ft paver patio on ordinary ground:

Two mistakes account for most failed patios. The first is using pea gravel as the base โ€” round stone cannot lock together, so it moves under load forever. Base stone must be angular and must contain fines. The second is a thick bedding layer: the sand course is one inch, screeded, and never used to level out a base that was not level. The single most useful distinction is washed versus with fines. Washed stone has the dust screened out: water runs straight through it, so it belongs in drains, dry wells and anywhere drainage is the job. Stone with fines โ€” crusher run, quarry process โ€” compacts into a hard, near-solid surface, which is what you want under pavers and on top of a driveway, and precisely what you do not want around a drain pipe.

Rounded stone never locks. Pea gravel and river rock look excellent and migrate constantly, so they need steel or timber edging and they should never be walked on in bare feet or used as a base for anything. How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

Four inches is the absolute minimum, and only on firm, well-drained subgrade. Over clay, over ground that stays wet, or anywhere a delivery truck will turn, build 8 to 12 inches in three layers โ€” coarse angular stone at the bottom, a mid layer of 3/4 inch stone, then a finer top course. A thin driveway does not fail evenly; it fails in ruts wherever the wheels track, and repairing that costs more than building it properly did.

Do I need landscape fabric under gravel?

Under decorative gravel, yes โ€” a woven geotextile keeps the stone from working down into the soil and stops perennial weeds coming up. Under a driveway or paver base, use a proper woven separation fabric rather than the thin weed membrane sold in garden centres; its job is stopping the subgrade pumping up into the stone, which is what turns a base to mush. Never use plastic sheeting anywhere; it traps water above it.

Why is gravel sold by the ton instead of the cubic yard?

Because weight can be verified and loose volume cannot. A truck crosses a certified scale and you get a ticket; a loader bucket of stone varies with how wet it is and how it was loaded. It also suits the quarry, which produces by weight. Tonnage uses a working density of 1.5 tons (3,000 lb) per cubic yard, which makes one ton exactly 18 cubic feet and sits inside the 2,400โ€“3,000 lb per cubic yard range used across this site; dense crushed limestone can reach about 1.7 tons per yard and washed river rock can fall to about 1.3, so local density should be confirmed with the supplier for large orders. The 20 percent compaction allowance applies to angular crushed stone with fines under mechanical compaction; washed rounded stone such as pea gravel and river rock is not given an allowance because it does not consolidate.
