How Much Does a Yard of Mulch Weigh โ and Will It Fit in My Truck?
What does a cubic yard of each material weigh?
Volume is identical across materials โ a cubic yard is always 27 cubic feet โ but weight is not, and the spread is enormous. This table gives the working ranges used by every tool on this site, plus how many yards each class of truck can legally take per trip at the midpoint density.

The pattern is worth stating plainly: mulch is the only material on that list a passenger truck moves in useful quantity. Everything else is a single scoop per trip at best, which is why yards deliver soil and stone by the truckload and why the delivery fee is not the rip-off it looks like.

Will it actually fit in the bed?
Two separate limits apply, and whichever is smaller wins. The first is volume, which is geometry:

The second limit is payload, from the table above. For mulch at 600 lb per yard, a standard bed holds 1.81 yards weighing about 1,090 lb โ volume is the binding constraint, and the truck barely notices. For topsoil, the same bed would hold 1.81 yards weighing 4,250 lb, which is roughly three times what a half-ton should be carrying. The bed will physically accept it. The suspension, brakes and tyres are a different conversation.
The phrase “half-ton” is a nameplate left over from the 1930s. Modern trucks sold under that badge have payload ratings anywhere from 1,300 to well over 2,000 lb, and the only number that matters is the one on the sticker inside the driver’s door โ minus the driver, passengers, tools and whatever is already in the bed.
How many trips is my project?
Run two realistic jobs through the arithmetic.
A 500 sq ft mulch refresh at 3 inches needs 4.63 cubic yards, weighing about 2,780 lb at 600 lb per yard. In a standard bed the volume limit of 1.81 yards binds first, so that is 3 trips. Each load is around 1,090 lb, which is fine. Three round trips to a yard fifteen minutes away is roughly two hours, against a $65 delivery.
A 1,000 sq ft new lawn at 4 inches of topsoil needs 12.35 cubic yards, weighing about 29,000 lb โ 14.5 tons. At half a yard per trip that is 25 trips in a half-ton pickup. There is no version of that project that a homeowner hauls themselves; it is a tandem dump truck, probably two.
The gap between three trips and twenty-five is the whole point, and it comes entirely from density rather than from volume. Volume for either job comes out of the mulch calculator or the topsoil calculator.
What about trailers?
A trailer moves the weight problem rather than solving it. A single-axle 5 ร 8 utility trailer typically carries 1,500 to 1,900 lb and has around 40 cubic feet of space with the standard low sides โ that is 1.5 yards of mulch by volume, but only about 0.7 of a yard of topsoil before the axle rating is reached.
Two things catch people out. First, the tow vehicle’s own payload has to absorb the tongue weight, which is normally 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer โ so a fully loaded trailer puts another 200 lb or so into the truck bed before anything is placed there. Second, gross combined weight ratings exist and are frequently the binding limit on smaller SUVs. If you are hiring a trailer to move soil, the rental counter’s stated capacity is the number to work to, not the volume of the box.
How do you make a heavy load safer?
- Load over the axle, not at the tailgate. Weight behind the rear axle lifts the front wheels and steering goes light exactly when you need it.
- Spread it, do not pile it. A cone of gravel in the middle of the bed concentrates load and shifts under braking.
- Tarp anything loose. Mulch blows out at highway speed, and in most states an unsecured load is an offence regardless of what escapes.
- Leave the last yard behind. If the arithmetic says you are within 10 percent of the payload rating, you are over it โ nobody weighs themselves, their passenger and the toolbox.
- Drop the tyre-pressure question before you leave. Loaded trucks want the higher pressure printed on the door sticker, not the pressure that felt nice unladen.
If the numbers say more than two trips of anything except mulch, take the delivery. The break-even between hauling and delivery is worked through with real prices in bagged vs bulk mulch.

How many yards of mulch fit in a pickup truck?
About 1.8 cubic yards level with the rails of a 6.5 ft bed, or 2.2 in an 8 ft bed, and you can heap it a little higher because mulch stays put. At a mid-range 600 lb per yard that is 1,050 to 1,350 lb, which most half-ton trucks handle. Mulch is the exception among landscape materials: the bed fills before the payload rating is reached, so volume is the limit rather than weight.
Does wet mulch weigh much more than dry mulch?
Substantially โ a pile that has been rained on can gain a third to a half of its dry weight, which is exactly the difference between the 400 and 800 lb ends of the range. This matters twice. A load you carried easily in August is near the limit in April, and a bagged pallet stored outdoors is much heavier per bag than the same product from inside a warehouse.
How much topsoil can a half-ton pickup carry?
About half a cubic yard, and that is not a conservative figure. Screened topsoil at 2,350 lb per yard puts a single yard well over the usable payload of most half-tons once a driver, tools and a tailgate full of nothing in particular are accounted for. Two yards of topsoil is roughly 4,700 lb in a bed rated for a fraction of that, and the failure mode is brakes and suspension, not a warning light.
Is it cheaper to haul material myself or pay for delivery?
Delivery wins on anything heavy and on anything past two or three yards. A $65 delivery fee replaces three to twenty-five round trips depending on material, and the fuel plus the hours almost never come out ahead. Self-hauling makes sense for one or two yards of mulch, which is light, or for a handful of bags to finish a job that a bulk load left short.
