What will your mulch actually cost?
Mulch cost and bags-vs-bulk calculator
Break-even at 3.5 cubic yards
Your job is 4.6 cubic yards — bulk is cheaper here by $8.50
- Bagged: 63 bags
- $283.50
- Bulk: 5 yd delivered
- $275.00
- Bagged cost per cubic yard
- $60.75
Delivery is usually one flat fee per drop, not per yard โ which is the whole reason a break-even exists.

Is bagged or bulk mulch cheaper?
Bulk wins once the delivery fee is spread over more cubic yards than the bag premium can cover โ at $4.50 a 2 cu ft bag, $42 a bulk yard and a $65 delivery, the crossing point is 3.5 cubic yards. Below that, bags are cheaper. Above it, the load is.
The arithmetic is one line. Bagged mulch costs 13.5 ร the bag price per cubic yard, so $4.50 a bag is $60.75 a yard. Bulk is $42 a yard plus one flat delivery. The gap between them is $18.75 per yard, and $65 รท $18.75 = 3.5 yards before the delivery is paid off.
A 500 sq ft bed at 3 inches is 4.63 cubic yards โ past the crossing point, so bulk it is: 63 bags would cost $283.50 against $275 for five yards delivered, and you skip the loading, the unloading and the plastic. Change any price above and the break-even moves with it.
Every article on this subject ends with “bulk is cheaper over about three yards” and none of them show the working, because the answer depends on three numbers that are different in every town: the bag price, the yard price and the delivery fee. Change the delivery from $50 to $85 and the crossing point moves by more than a yard.
The table below is the same calculation at four common bag prices, against a $42 bulk yard and a $65 delivery, so you can see how sharply the bag price alone moves the decision.
| Bag price (2 cu ft) | Bagged cost per yard | Break-even vs bulk |
|---|---|---|
| $3.50 | $47.25 | 12.4 cubic yards |
| $4.00 | $54.00 | 5.4 cubic yards |
| $4.50 | $60.75 | 3.5 cubic yards |
| $5.50 | $74.25 | 2.0 cubic yards |
Cheap bags push the break-even out of reach of any home garden; expensive ones make a single-yard delivery worth it. Work out how many bags you would be carrying before you decide either way.
Frequently asked questions
How much does mulch cost per cubic yard?
Bulk hardwood mulch typically runs $30 to $50 a cubic yard picked up and $35 to $60 delivered before the drop fee, with dyed and premium blends at the top of that band. Bagged mulch is $3.50 to $6 for 2 cu ft, which is $47 to $81 a cubic yard โ roughly 50 to 90 percent more than bulk for the same material.
How much is mulch delivery?
Most yards charge one flat fee of $50 to $85 per trip inside their normal radius, not per cubic yard, and many waive it above four or five yards. That flat structure is exactly why the break-even exists: the fee costs $65 a yard on a one-yard order and $13 a yard on five.
Can I mix bags and bulk?
Yes, and on odd-shaped jobs it is the cheapest answer. Order bulk to cover the large beds where you can barrow straight from the pile, then buy two or three bags to finish the awkward strips by the drive. You pay the bag premium only on the volume where bags genuinely save you work.
Why can't I return bulk mulch?
Once it is tipped on your drive it is yours โ no supplier restocks a pile that has touched the ground. Bags go back to any big-box store unopened with a receipt. That asymmetry is worth about half a yard of insurance: order bulk slightly short of the calculated volume and top up with bags.
Does the delivery fee change with distance?
Usually in steps rather than per mile. A yard will quote one price inside its core zone, a higher one for the next band out, and decline beyond that. Ask for the zone price before you compare quotes, because a $10 cheaper yard price with a $25 higher delivery loses on anything under three yards.
Is dyed mulch worth the extra?
It costs roughly $5 to $15 more per cubic yard and holds its colour for a full season rather than fading by midsummer, which is a fair trade if colour is the point. It is not a functional upgrade: dyed mulch suppresses weeds and holds moisture no better than the undyed shredded hardwood it is usually made from.
