How this works

Add one row per component with the same bed dimensions and the share each takes of the mix. The shares should add to 100. A common bed mix is around 60 percent topsoil, 30 percent compost and 10 percent something to open the structure, but this depends on what your soil already is.

Why not fill a raised bed with compost?

It has almost no mineral structure, so it decomposes and collapses, and it holds nutrients so strongly that it can burn seedlings in the first season. It belongs in a mix, not on its own.

Why allow twenty percent for settling?

Because a freshly filled bed settles substantially in the first few weeks, and topping it up later means a second small order at the worst price.

How we calculate this

Each row is the full bed volume multiplied by that component’s share of the mix, so the shares should total 100 percent. Volume is length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27 for cubic yards.
